Social media provides an excellent opportunity to interact with others. But, not everyone likes to let everyone know what they had for dinner last night. Twitter is the second most social media platform, after Facebook. Likes is one twitter feature that tells a lot about your preferences. Don’t tell me you have never judged a person who likes every tweet of some celebrity. Even Twitter uses this information to suggest you similar posts. So, if you want to guard your privacy by learning how to hide likes on Twitter, I am here to help!
How to hide likes on Twitter?
No, you cannot just turn a feature off to hide your likes. There’s no clear-cut way to hide your likes from your followers or non-followers. All you can do is try some workarounds to limit your audience. Unfortunately, these workarounds put some other kinds of limitations on your profile. Therefore, try these solutions only if you are really desperate to keep the information of your Likes private.
Alright, enough talk. Let’s look at the workarounds.
1. Go Private, hide your Twitter activity from non-followers
This is straightforward. Go to your profile settings and make sure the “Protect my Tweets” option is set to on. As the name suggests, this will protect your tweets from non-followers. It won’t hide the fact that you liked or retweeted something. Nor will it keep them away from knowing what kind of posts you like. However, they won’t be able to know the specifics either – i.e., who you are!
Below are the steps to go private on Twitter:
- Go to profile settings (gear icon) located at the top right corner of your Twitter page.
- Scroll down and go to the “Privacy and Safety” option,
- Next, go to the “audience and tagging” option. It will be located on top of all the other settings
- Finally, turn on the “protect my tweets” toggle. This will set your account to private, as you can see in the image below. This way, non-followers will not be able to see your Likes – unless you approve them.
2. Disable Replies and Likes to Tweets in your Timeline
This is another straightforward option if you want to hide your likes. Go to your profile settings -> Content -> Turn off the option of “Replay Tweets and Likes.” This keeps people from knowing who you like and protects you from seeing similar posts yourself!
3. Delete all your public activity from Twitter
This is one of the most extreme ways to avoid others from looking at your likes on Twitter. All you need to do is delete all your past history from Twitter using a third-party app called “Delete All Activity”. Follow these steps:
- Open Twitter, click on settings located in the right corner above the search bar→Go to your account settings→scroll down to find the “Apps” section in the “Account” tab.
- Scroll down in the apps section and click on the app titled Delete All Activity by IFTTT
So, this is how to hide likes on Twitter for the time being.
4. Reply to Tweets instead of liking them
Go through your timeline, and open all the tweets that have received likes but are not interesting at all. Now do this: RT or Reply with a witty comment using quotes or emojis(try my emoji guide for reference). Say something meaningful so that they later appear in your activity log too. This way, you will not only reply with an original tweet but also keep your likes hidden from others.
5. Delete individual likes automatically
If you have a sudden urge to delete a single like on a tweet, you can do it easily using the web or mobile apps designed for this purpose or the computer’s inbuilt browser control panel (Only if you are on Chrome). Here is how:
Go through your activity log and copy the URL of tweets that you want to delete individual likes from→the Open TweetDeleter website and paste the link in the search box on the top right corner→. On the next page, click on ‘Delete’ beside the stars.
You can also use Circleboom or Twitter Archive Eraser instead of TweetDeleter. All of these tools work perfectly for this purpose. However, these are premium apps that cost you money. If you are broke, try any of the other solutions to hide likes on Twitter.
6. Delete all Likes and Retweets individually
You can also go old school and delete all the likes one by one individually. To delete all your likes and retweets on a tweet, simply open that tweet and hit the down arrow key till you see an option titled “Clear all likes”→click on it to clear the activity from every like/retweet you have done so far on that tweet. If you want to delete your Likes one by one, just go to the “Likes” column on your profile and “unheard” all of your favorites.
However, manual Like deletion has one major limitation. You cannot access all of your likes. Suppose you have been super active on the platform with more than 4000 likes, then Twitter will only show you 3,200 likes. You won’t be able to access old 800 likes.
7. Use Javascript code to auto-delete all of your likes
Javascript code for automatic deletion of likes is another way of automatically deleting all of your Likes in one go. Just copy-paste this code on the end of your URL and hit enter :
javascript:(function(){var%20d=document.querySelector(“div.js-actionarea>a>i.js-like”);if(d){var%20s=d.querySelector(“span”).innerText;setTimeout(function(){var%20e=document.querySelector(“div.js-actionarea>a>i.js-like”);while(e){e.click();e=e.parentNode}})()} })()||window.location.href
Alternatively
You can also use this code to delete all of your likes in no time. An instructions guide is included in the link. You can use this method to hide likes for the time being. Any future likes will still be visible to your audience.
8. Spread some love Twitter-style (Available in the Future)
If you really cannot stop yourself from liking tweets but want to keep your profile squeaky clean, try using Twitter Reactions. According to sources, Twitter is testing Facebook-style emoticons to react to a tweet. Once they become available on the platform, you can use them to show your love instead of “Liking” a tweet. Apparently, there will be six emoticons in the first phase. Now, we can’t wait for the new feature to roll out.
9. Delete your Twitter profile forever
If you are unable to get rid of your Twitter Likes and don’t like any of the solutions mentioned above, then the only solution is to leave the platform. So, delete your account and create a new one every time you need to like something (I know you can’t live without one!).
When you delete your Twitter account, all of your previous activity, including likes, followers, following, and tweets, will be permanently deleted. That means hiding Twitter likes is no longer a problem. Here’s how you can delete your Twitter account:
Log in to your Twitter account→Visit https://twitter.com/settings/deactivate and enter your password when prompted→Click the “Deactivate my account” button on the dialogue box, and you’re done!
How to hide other people’s likes from the news feed?
As Twitter is an open social media platform, it lets people see each other’s activities. That’s why sometimes, you see the likes of your followers or following in your news feed which you don’t really want to. Here are a few ways you can stop this from happening.
1. Unfollow them
If someone is not following you back, it means that their entire activity will be displayed in your news feed even if they like some random person’s tweet. So unfollow them to block their activity from appearing in your news feed.
2. Turn off activity updates in the home feed
Select “See First” from the drop-down list in your profile→Search for any person you want to block in the search bar on the top right corner→Uncheck the “Activity” column below their name(see screenshot)
3. Stop showing retweets in the newsfeed
Now and then, you might see tweets of people that you don’t even follow in your home feed which can be really irritating. You can stop this by turning off the “retweets” column from your news feed. Just go to settings and change the order in which columns appear on your news feed.
4. Use apps like Protector
There are paid apps available on the Google Play store that let you hide likes from your news feed. Simply install any one of them, and it will do the job for you by blocking all the activities which are not directed to you.
5. Unfollow everyone who likes someone else’s tweets
This is very easy but can be time-consuming if there are hundreds of people on your list. Just go through every user manually and un-heart each member who has liked someone else’s tweet. This might annoy most of your followers, so keep this trick limited to use only when necessary.
